Here's the thing, when someone smiles at you, our brains almost react without us even realizing it (unless you're Grumpy McGrumperson and just walk around with a snarled look all the time). And guess what, same thing happens when you smile at someone else. They too, will be infected with a little happiness.
Last time in my blog I called out one of my Dad's behaviors, now it's time to call out Mom. She had this annoying habit of forcing us to smile when we were upset! I know, horrible, right?! When we were mad or frustrated she would say 'just smile, it'll make it better'. "I don't want to smile" I'd say, I wanted to wallow in my anger and frustration. She had played that trick too many times, I knew it worked and I wasn't ready to move on.
But man, oh man, she was persistent and the inevitable would happen. Smiling can trick your brain into deflating the negative emotions and the positive take over. She was right, it did make things better.
The effects not only benefit us, but others as well. Smiling at someone can have a ripple effect. And just seeing someone smile at us, makes us feel acknowledged, and that in of itself is something we all desire. Smiling is absolutely one of the best and easiest things we can do to improve our overall health. Check this out:
- Smiling can actually help you live longer with its extraordinary health benefits. It boosts your immunity system, lowers blood pleasure and releases endorphins.
-Smiling helps us stay positive, relieves stress, eases anxiety and negative thoughts.
- Smiling can put others at ease, make you seem approachable and strangers are more likely to talk to you.
-Smiling actually makes you look younger. ( Hello, no plastic surgery need here!)
-People who smile are perceived as more confident and successful.
- Smiling at someone can actually make their day...and yours....awww, so sweet!
Now, this is the part where I could insist you smile, but I won't. Instead go out and make a conscious effort to smile at a stranger today, or here's a novel idea, smile at your partner as they walk in the door tonight!
Like this? Then share it. Hate it? Well, then apparently someone needs to smile!
